MAY EDITION OF THE LCVYS "LOLLY" ================================ LCVYS 1942 - 2002 celebrating 60 years After a rather busy week, I’m now writing this from our new offices in the centre of Preston. We’re sad to leave our good friends at Community Futures on Victoria Road but we’re equally happy to meet our new friends at ConneXions on Guildhall Street where we are sharing their premises. The additional space we now have will open up some exiting new opportunities for us in the near future. Watch this space……… You are cordially invited to our official opening and open day on Wednesday the 12th June. Simply contact the office to let us know how many of you will be attending so we can ensure we have sufficient refreshments available for you. You’ll be able to have a look at the new services we will be able to offer our membership from that date. Sadly, we were unable to take our old telephone and fax numbers with us and so we have a new set of numbers. A map and directions can be found as a fact sheet on our web site or by request from the office. Our web site and e-mail contact details remain the same as before with the addition of a new e-mail address for Val - val@lcvys.org.uk. Congratulations go to Chorley Adventure Youth Club who are members of LCVYS through their affiliation to Lancashire Youth Association who have just received a £6,000 grant from the Children’s Fund Local Network for a set of Quad bikes. This fund really is simple to apply for, check out our fact sheet on the web site or ring us for a copy. CAYC are also our Page 3 article this month. Thank you to everyone who was involved with our Charity Fair, it was a huge success, see Page 2 for a brief report following the feedback we’ve received. That’s it for this month, please help us spread the word with our new contact details and feel free to pop into the new offices to say hello; The kettle is always on…………. Would exhibitors be interested in attending? Would people come to visit? How do we fund it? There were many questions that we asked ourselves before we took the plunge but we made that decision and booked the College on the 31st January. That only gave us 10 weeks to pull the whole thing together, convince the exhibitors to come, plan the logistics, develop the website and booking systems and so on. It was a hectic 10 weeks but the planning paid off and the day ran very smoothly indeed. Feedback has been received from a number of delegates and from a large percentage of the exhibitors. In the main, the feedback seemed to give the overall impression that the event had great potential, that the systems we put in place were very good, the venue was the best we could find in the area and there was definite interest by all concerned to attend the event next year. For an event of this scale though, there were obviously going to be lessons to be learned and the main disappointment was the lack of delegates. Although a good number of people visited on the day, there could have been many more people there to benefit from the excellent exhibitions and support laid on for them. Although we issued 4 press releases to over 50 agencies in the lead up to the event covering all local newspapers, television, radio and even teletext, the message just didn’t seem to get through. We found it VERY hard to publicise an event that had never happened before and had no pictures to promote it. The location of our reception desk was also a concern as it was not easy to find and with hindsight, could have been placed outdoors (given the excellent weather) right outside the reception area. We also planned the layout to cope with much larger numbers, hence the spaciousness of the exhibition hall and the need to operate a second hall. Looking back, we could have managed to fit everyone in the one hall with the number of delegates that arrived but it would have been cramped and dangerous if delegate numbers were greater than they were. There have been a good number of success stories from the event and these are listed on the website at and these alone mean that we MUST ensure the event happens again next year. At least this time, we have many more weeks to publicise the event so we should be able to improve on the delegate numbers quite easily. The event cost in the region of £3,500 to put on in addition to our staff time and although the event was free of charge for Charities to exhibit and delegates to enter, we need to find a way of funding this project for next time and that is something we are working on at the moment. Currently, we have booked Preston College again for Saturday the 5th April 2003 for the next event and we will be publishing future information in the “Lolly” about how to book, what is happening, who is coming and so on. In the mean time, if you would like to be involved with the Charity Fair in some way, whether as an exhibitor, a delegate, a funder or as part of the organising team, please get in touch with us in the LCVYS office and we’ll see what we can do together. Spotlight on: Chorley Adventure Youth Club ========================================== This year is quite special for Chorley Adventure Youth Club, September sees our 30th Anniversary - not bad for a club which was set up by three 14 year old schoolboys as something to pass the time away during the school holidays - I never thought all those years ago I would still be running it 30 years later, although the other two founders are no longer involved. In 1980, the club changed direction and instead of being just a traditional style of youth club, we decided to concentrate mainly on outdoor activities - giving the young people of Chorley the chance to get a Taste for Adventure. Our members, however, come from a wide range of backgrounds, and we subsidise the cost of all expensive activities from club funds to ensure everyone has the opportunity of taking part without it breaking their parent's banks. We are a friendly, informal club catering for the 10 to 15 age group with a strong emphasis on member involvement - we have a successful Members' Forum in which the elected members take an active part in planning the club's activities every month, as well as helping to raise funds - an essential ingredient for an active voluntary club like ours. The club is run by a committee of trustees made up of the club leaders, parents and other interested people. Members are encouraged to attend these meetings. We are unlike most other clubs as we have no headquarters instead we offer a varied programme of outdoor pursuits and social activities taking place at evenings and weekends throughout the year. Over the course of a year members are able to participate in a wide range of both sporting and social activities such as water skiing, kneeboarding, regular camping trips, mountain walking, rock climbing, alpines skiing, archery, kayaking, etc, etc. Hard work by our members, leaders and trustees over the years means the club's equipment store is in a very enviable position - we own our own 17 seater minibus, 10 seater speedboat, kayaks etc and a vast storeroom of wetsuits, wetboots, buoyancy aids, waterproofs, hiking boots, rucksacks, tents etc etc. Every year we hold a major camp to foreign parts, this year a group has just returned from touring around California, Arizona and Nevada in the USA. We publish our own monthly club mag “The Adventurer” which has club news, features and details of all the activities planned for the following month. The magazine is delivered to all members at the beginning of each month, and in a few days of mad frenzy, all activities for the month are soon fully booked. Thanks to a superb grant from the Children's Fund - Local Network, and our own fund raising efforts, the club is at present embarking on a new activity - quad biking. We have just purchased 5 brand new quad bikes in a wide variety of sizes as well as helmets, waterproofs, body armour etc. Paul Glucklich Club Leader, Chorley Adventure Youth Club Editor’s Note: If you want more information on how to apply to the Children’s Fund Local Network, contact LCVYS or view the fact sheet on the website at ………..Pete Volunteering On-line ==================== Volunteers are spoilt for choice on the Internet. Almost every charity site has details of how to get involved, whether campaigning for animal rights of becoming a heritage guide. Luckily, there are online short cuts, such as Do-It, the National Centre for Volunteering and Timebank, which contain a range of opportunities - domestic and international - listed by interests or searchable by postcode. Or check the National Association of Volunteer Bureaux (NAVB) for your local centre to visit. Also offering volunteering vacancies, including the kind of experience-building, CV-enhancing internships for those fresh to the field, are many job sites, such as Charity People or Jobs in Charities. Heading abroad, Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) has 1 - 2 year paid placings for all ages and many abilities, from graduates to grannies, while the just completed International Year of Volunteers (IYV) offers links to opportunities for young and old, and the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) has paid short-term - months to years - postings. The Internet itself offers new ways to volunteer, from online tuition to mentoring, advice or simply a sympathetic e-ear. NetAid lists global possibilities, the Media Trust looks for communication skills, and the Virtual Volunteering Project (VVP) is a helpful guide.
