Connexions Grants ================= Is the process working in Lancashire? Whilst at times we may think of ways to fine tune the development fund grants in Lancashire, looking at the wider picture around the Country really does open your eyes. Every single Connexions Partnership area has the opportunity to use 5% of their total funding to award to the Voluntary & Community sector in grant aid in their area. The 2002/2003 round saw 3 million pounds awarded to the voluntary & community sector nationally and of this, a third was awarded in the North-West which shows that the North West does have its act together. Over one third of this million pounds however was awarded in Lancashire and that makes over 10 per cent of the national figure! LCVYS has worked closely with Connexions to ensure that this went well and we have been working hard again over the last few months to make sure that the process goes even better in this new round for 2003/2004 CONGRATULATIONS =============== Fylde Coast YMCA which has received a Community Fund grant of £300,000 to refurbish an existing building to be used for a variety of community activities including hobby groups, childcare groups, basic IT skills workshops, and to provide a general meeting place. THE NATIONWIDE AWARDS FOR VOLUNTARY ENDEAVOUR ============================================= Throughout the United Kingdom, there are thousands of people who happily give up their time to help our local communities. They could be working for a local charity – helping to raise funds or running charity support programmes. Or perhaps they are caring for others in different ways: caring for the old; the young; the sick; the needy. They often work long hours under difficult conditions to support their chosen cause. Very few of these people, our ‘local hero’s’ in the community, expect recognition, but they certainly deserve it! That is why we have introduced The Nationwide awards for Voluntary Endeavour, which is now in its sixth year. These Awards are designed to recognise those who have made an outstanding contribution to the local community. In particular we wish to recognise those people whose efforts have added value to the causes they support, whether it’s raising funds for a charity or providing help and assistance to others. The scheme has been developed by Nationwide Building Society, with the support of the National Council for Voluntary Organisations, together with its sister organisations in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, and the Newspaper Society, which represents local and regional newspapers throughout the United Kingdom. There are four Categories: Young people under the age of 18 individual Adults; as individuals Young people under the age of 18 group Adults as groups From each category in Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and the English regions, the judging panel will select finalists who will be put forward for a national award, i.e. four finalists from each region making a total of 40 finalists. The finalist will receive gifts to the value of £250 for themselves, with a cheque for £500 to give to their chosen charity or cause. From the 40 finalists, 4 national winners will be chosen, one in each category. The national winners will receive gifts to the value of £500, plus a trophy, together with a cheque for £2,500 to give to their choice of charity or cause. We welcome these views and we’d appreciate the opportunity to be able to “tweak” our performance to make our members even happier than they are now. This is why we have launched our major “Membership Survey” and in-line with this, we are offering a number of very nice prizes to encourage you to take the time out to send us your views. We have just sent out a mailshot to our entire database of contacts with information about the next round of Connexions grants and the Charity Fair and included a copy of this survey form (You can also complete it on-line at www.lcvys.org.uk) Please feel free to complete & return a form to us at our Freepost address. LCVYS Database FREEPOST NEA15539, PRESTON, PR1 3BR Alternatively, you may also complete the form on-line at www.lcvys.org.uk Although we’d like to be able to see who had what views, we also appreciate that some of our members may prefer to remain anonymous and that is fine although we obviously cannot award any of the prizes to winners who do not give their contact details. Winners will be drawn at random mid afternoon at the Charity Fair at Preston College on Saturday the 5th April 2003. If you wish, you are very welcome to drop off your survey form at our stand on the day but make sure you hand it in in plenty of time. Some of the topics we are trying to cover are things such as our AGM. Do you attend our AGM? If not, why not? Is it at an inconvenient time? Is it too boring? What would you like to see as an attraction to draw you too it? Similarly, our forums attract a mixed response, we’ve had some excellent speakers from the CRB, from funders and all sorts but the number that attend varies considerably and is never overwhelming considering the size of our membership. Have you been to any? Is Wednesday night a bad night for you? What would attract you? Is the venue (County Hall) the right one or should we move around elsewhere? Of the services we provide, which do you rate as the best and the worst? What else would you like us to offer if we had the capacity to do so? Our training course project is approaching its final year of Community Fund funding, how much do you value this support? Would you like us to try and extend the project by finding additional funding or is it time to move on to something else? Are the courses we provide the right ones? Are they the right price? How much do you value the Lolly? Do you get it in the paper or the e-mail format? Would you like to see this continue or even expand or is it big enough already? Does it come out frequently enough or too often? Which bits do you find the most useful? We offer support for people seeking funding. Have you used this service or even our funding desk? If not, why not? Do you have enough funding already? We won an award for our web site but how do you find it? Is it up to date? Does it contain the information you need? Is it easy to use? What is missing? We have 3 handbooks, our Members handbook, the Residential Centres handbook and our “Snapshot of the Millennium” Did you purchase any of these? What do you think of them? Would you like to see new updated copies made available? Thanks in anticipation of you taking the time to get in touch……………………… Pete TRIODOS BANK ============ Triodos Bank, Brunel House, 11 The Promenade, Bristol BS8 3NN Tel: 0800 328 2181 Fax: 0117 973 9303 E-mail: charities@triodos.co.uk Website: www.triodos.co.uk Contact: Charity Banking Team 20 years of financing the social economy has taught us a great deal about the unique challenges faced by many charities.
