The group, accompanied by 12 fully qualified Mountain Leaders, departed from Glasgow on Sunday 18th July, bound for Iceland. They will proceed to Constablepynt from where they will continue their journey in a ski-equipped Twin Otter aircraft, eventually landing on the glacial systems in the centre of Milne Land, in the innermost reaches of Scoresbysund. From a base camp near their landing site they will make many 'first ascents' of the attractive peaks and spires in the area, as well as undertaking a comprehensive scientific programme encompassing studies in Ecology, Glaciology and Human Physiology. Scouts Organising Commissioner, Dick Griffiths, is himself an experienced and highly qualified mountaineer and will be acting as Expedition Leader – "This is a fantastic opportunity for these young people to develop their skills and realise their potential through exploring the Arctic Wilderness, climbing remote mountains (some of which are previously unclimbed) and undertaking scientific research and exploration. Most of all I hope that the expedition can promote Scouting and show how we can be at the forefront of providing high levels of adventure and challenge and in developing personal and leadership potential" The Expedition is costing in the order of £100,000 and the team have worked hard to fundraise and secure patronage and other forms of support. Even so each team member still had to find around £2,000 to take part in the adventure of a lifetime. The team have the technology to transmit photos and images via satellite phone and to keep the Expedition website at www.landactivities.co.uk/greenland updated throughout their adventure. But Greenland is not the only international experience that Scouts will enjoy this summer; During the expedition, the Greenland Expedition will help celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Waddcecar, one of the Scout County's outdoor activity Centres of Excellence by linking up with over 1,000 friends and colleagues who will be taking part in an International Jamboree at Waddecar, County Explorer Belt Expeditions in Slovenia, and the World Scout Moot in Taiwan. The Outward Bound Award Ceremony was in recognition of their team efforts in winning the National Outward Bound Wilderness Challenge Competition. The Young People were awarded a Shield and £1,000 of Field and Treck vouchers by HRH Prince Andrew and each team member also received a rucksack from Outward Bound. Preliminary heats for this competition were held back in September 2003 at Fort William and Wales. Carnforth Air Cadets subsequently won their heat and went on to compete in the National Outward Bound Wilderness Challenge, which was held at Ullswater. The six teams who met to take part in this prestigious National Competition were from Oxford, Belfast (2), Carnforth, Suffolk and the reigning champions for 3 years in a row, Newcastle. All competitors were aged between 16-25 years. The aim of the weekend was to survive in the wild for two days without the everyday items that we take for granted such as food, water, heat and shelter. The weekend involved many arduous tasks. The young people were allowed no items apart from the clothes they were in - even their watches were removed. Firstly, the young people were taken to an isolated location in Grisedale Forest and after establishing where they were, their task was to search for food in the forest, such as plants and fungi. They had to orienteer in order to receive essential items such as sleeping bags, mars bars, small amount of nuts and one tin of beans along with basic equipment required for snares, traps and fishing. Following this they had to build their own waterproof shelter from their surroundings in the forest – this is where they spent Saturday night. They were also assessed on various tasks throughout the weekend which included fire lighting (without the aid of matches), making of snares and traps, collection of wild food and water, first aid scenarios, guestimation of time, building of latrines, compass making, fishing and cooking. Commanding Officers Comments: Flt Lt Linda Head I was delighted to learn that the Young People of Carnforth Squadron had won this prestigious National Competition. They have all been working hard the past few months and have learnt many new skills which will no doubt, be useful in the future. Not enough young people have the determination to take part in such an arduous and demanding competition. The visit to Buckingham Palace was the culmination and result of great “Teamwork”. The evening consisted of drinks and canapés in an informal setting. The young people thoroughly enjoyed meeting HRH Prince Andrew as he took the time to speak to them all individually. What an end to a great competition! Horses and animals are used to develop social skills, self-esteem and confidence by hands on experiences and the learning of new practical skills working with supportive staff and friendly, docile animals. This alternative education has proved very effective in particular with young people who are disadvantaged in society either by personal circumstance, social background or behavioural issues that impact on their education or personal development. This work is now being extended to provide an alternative to ineffective or inappropriate educational situations using environmental based activities such as the creation of wildlife habitats, conservation topics and an introduction to environmental maintenance and recycling. DUNCAN DARES TO LEAD SCOUTING INTO THE FUTURE Scouts around west Lancashire will soon have a new Chief after bosses invited actor, TV presenter and all-round action man, Peter Duncan to take up the challenge. Peter will become the 9th Chief Scout when he starts his 5 year appointment in September, and is delighted to be leading the UK Scout Association as it welcomes tens of thousands of scouts at the European Jamboree, 'EuroJam', in 2005 and celebrates its Centenary by hosting the World Scout Jamboree in 2007. Famous for his round-the-world expeditions, Peter's appetite for adventure and desire to break new ground will fit perfectly with the aspirations of the young people in west Lancashire; This summer, whilst over 1000 Scouts and Guides celebrate in Lancashire at the Red Rose 2004 International Jamboree, some of their friends will be undertaking adventures and expeditions as far away as Croatia, Taiwan and Greenland. Former Cub Scout Peter is applying his usual enthusiastic approach to the new role "Scouting is alive and well in 21st century Britain. For more information contact Gillian Smith at Community Futures on 01772 717461 INFORMATION SHARING AND ASSESSMENT In line with Every Child Matters (ECM) and Information Sharing and Assessment (ISA), the Children Bill has stipulated that each local authority will provide a web-based service directory of children’s services provided within their area. Lancashire, along with many other local authorities in the NW region, has decided to utilise a service directory which has been created specifically for this purpose – Partnerlink. The aim of it is to develop through partnership working with appropriate key agencies a system that will allow the collection, storage, analysis and dissemination of information on statutory, community and voluntary organisations providing services across the region. The data fields required for the prototype Partnerlink directory have been identified and in the near future a letter and questionnaire will be sent to relevant organisations for their completion. Over the next few months the process of data collation will be taking place. Naturally this will be a time consuming process, in the meantime if you have any further queries please contact: Fiona Benn, ISA Project Manager, 01772 532297 or e-mail Fiona.benn@ed.lancscc.gov.uk GRANTSNET GrantsNet gives information about grant schemes available to businesses and charities in the UK. The foundation makes almost 200 grants a year, mainly for welfare and educational causes, but with substantial support for conservation and rather less for medicine and the arts. Grants appear to be all for UK causes and perhaps half by number, though less by value, are in the areas of special interest given above. Though grants can be every large, all but a handful are usually for amounts of not more than £60,000 and most are between £5,000 and just a few hundred pounds. About half of the beneficiaries were also supported in previous years. The foundation has previously noted that: ‘It is usual that the trustees have knowledge of, or connection with, those charities which are successful applicants. The trustees tend to support caring causes and not research.’ Exclusions - Only registered charities will be considered; charitable status applied for, or pending, is not sufficient. No grants to individuals, ‘holiday’ charities, student expeditions, or research projects. Applications in writing to the secretary, Colin Redman, 70 Grosvenor Street, London, W1K 3JP, enclosing an up-to-date set of accounts, together with a brief history of the project to date, and the current need.
