SKILLS EVENT FOR ARTS ORGANISATIONS Arts organisations in the north west are not often fully aware of the potential of engaging with the skills development agenda and the organisations and agencies that are developing it in the region. Arts Council England, North West is therefore developing an event/information day designed specifically to help arts organisations understand this rapidly changing and complicated area of work. The event, which is not designed for individual artists or creative businesses, will take place in January at UCLan (University of Central Lancashire). The primary aims of the day are: To explore ways in which arts organisations can become training providers, offering a service for creative practitioners, and others, in terms of work experience, mentoring, training and so on, as well as the potential for working with and drawing down funding from agencies such as the LSC. This area would probably be of most interest to large organisations. For arts organisations to consider the skills needs of their employees/clients and the benefits that this could bring to their organisation, as well as potential sources of development funding. This may be of more interest to smaller organisations. To provide a useful platform for the emerging Sector Skills Council for the Creative and Cultural Industries (Creative and Cultural Industries Limited) and the impact that this may have on skills development in the region. Letters will be sent out to all our regularly funded organisations with further details of this event. If you would like any further information contact Sharon Lowe, Creative Industries Assistant Officer on 0161 827 9219 or email her at sharon.lowe@artscouncil.org.uk THE ELECTRONIC LOLLY Free subscription is available to all for the electronic version of this newsletter which is published monthly. We’d like to tell you about how we have personally developed since we became involved in this Expedition. The Arctic is an awe-inspiring place. We have all been changed. We have learned skills that we can bring back to our Scouting, as citizens and to our personal and professional lives. We climbed rock faces, glacial icefalls and mountains, many of which no other person has ever set foot on. We mapped the area and collected samples of the rock to help others understand the geology and geography of this place. We saw glaciers carving the world. Absolutely NO CHARGE for admission tickets – which are limited to 500. We do still have some outstanding bills left to pay (none the least being for the Lecture Theatre!)………. so a small donation on the night will be appreciated. In addition, they are looking for projects that address a real need, involve children and young people facing up to challenges in their Community, have a positive impact upon a community, aim to bring about a real (and/or sustainable) change, offer relatively big impacts (scale and/or duration) for the money. The grant cannot be used for purposes of promoting a religion or a party political cause. If you know of a young person aged 13 to 19 who would benefit from support to access higher education (HE), then Aimhigher could be for them. Aimhigher is a new programme designed to enable and encourage more young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to access higher education. Aimhigher offers support, information and financial advice to 13-19 year olds from schools and FE colleges who have the potential to go to university but don’t have a family tradition of HE. Support is particularly aimed at students from non-traditional backgrounds, minority groups and disabled persons. Aimhigher also builds on the Gifted and Talented strand by extending it to students within post-16 institutions to help improve attainment, motivation and self-esteem, providing them with a coherent programme of timetabled teaching and study support. Links are being developed between schools, FE and 6th form colleges, work-based learning providers, HE institutions, LSC Lancashire, the Connexions Service, and the LEA. This will improve the transition of young people and students between sectors, enabling them to progress more smoothly to HE; and also encouraging collaborative working between the sectors for the benefit of all.
