History The Horses and Ponies Protection Association is one of the oldest and most respected Charities for equine welfare. HAPPA was founded in 1937 to help fight against the transportation of large horses to the continent for slaughter. However, complaints of horses, ponies and donkeys being ill treated, staved and abused were reported to the Association, and since then we have investigated many thousands of complaints. This has resulted in over 6,000 horses, ponies and donkeys being taken into our care, and once they have been brought into our care they will remain our responsibility until the end of their days. Today Each year some 60 –70 horses, ponies and donkeys are brought into one of our rescue centres – Shores Hey farm, Briercliffe, Lancashire and Gregory Farm, Gwent, South Wales and cared for until they are well. The animals that make a full recovery are placed on our loan scheme, where the animal can be loaned out to a suitable home under a legally binding agreement. Some of the animals that will remain at the rescue centres for the rest of their lives are put on our adoption scheme, whereby supporters can adopt them and visit them by appointment. A team of professional employees and youth volunteers run our rescue centres. These volunteers learn all aspects of horse care as well as gain an understanding of what responsibilities are involved in caring for an equine.
